“Shimba”, my first-ever acrylic painting on canvas, is named after my first adopted elephant from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage. This is a tribute to Shimba, who unfortunately died in 2013 after a tragic lion attack from which he never fully recovered from.
My interpretation of the blue skies and the green African bush are seen in the marbled background where the colors are married to create the ultimate impact. Shimba, the elephant, then emerges shining in the spotlight for his sheer grace and beauty. The thorny branches are my representation of the human-wildlife conflicts seen today, in terms of poaching and even human settlements in the wild.
This is a personal favorite, mostly because it features my favorite creature – an elephant and it was just so much fun to paint!
This is my first attempt at sharing my personal artwork on such a public platform.

Simply outstanding! Very appropriate for the story you conveyed. Also love the way you have brought out the thorns. Well done and hope to see more.

How long did it take you to do this painting from start to finish? Did it start as a sketch or did you immediately take brush to canvas?
Whatever the answers may be — this is really great work Jaini! I didn’t know you were a painter..? Unfortunately I won’t be able to tag you in any art work I’ve created unless eating 3 stacks of pancakes is considered an “art”. 😉

Hi Soni, thank you so much 🙂 the entire painting took about 2-3 months because I just worked on it for an hour every week. I had a picture of an elephant for reference, and once the background was marbled and dry (usually takes a week), I just painted straightaway so no sketches.
Food is always “art” to me (and you, I’m sure) because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 😉

Jaini I thought “Shimba” looked amazing! I am so used to seeing animal paintings everywhere but this is a unique piece. You are a genius to have created such an amazing art work on your first attempt of this style!!
Looking forward to your next blog!!
